A learning resource refers to any type of training used in LearnShare. Learning resources can be self-guided, web-based material launched by the learner or include the involvement of a trainer or learning coach. Many learning resources are available at any day and at any time. Others, like facilitated or instructor-led training, occur on a fixed date and time.
Some examples of learning resources might be:
Learning resources can be used as standalone training or part of a blended solution with a facilitated resource. You can create your own online course in the LMS using one of the LearnShare content development tools, create a course with an external course development tool, or obtain a course from a third party.
Learning resources can be grouped together in certificates or mapping curricula. Use certificates to group multiple learning resources into one resource. This means that users must complete the required training (learning resources) within the certificate to actually complete the certificate. Mapping curricula is used to group courses (learning resources) together for an audience, but each learning resource is displayed individually on the user's Learning Plan.
The LearnShare LMS has many different learning resource types, and they may even differ for each organization. Since each resource type may present different options to the administrator, it is important to know when to use each resource type.
| Resource Type | When to Use |
| Learning Resource |
This is a generic but advanced learning resource type. Every other resource type removes fields from the Maintain Learning Resources screen that are not applicable to the user based on their selected resource type. The Learning Resource resource type displays practically every existing field or option. This should be used when no other type is applicable. Examples include:
|
| Facilitated Training |
Any type of Instructor-Led Training:
|
| On-Line Training / CBT | This resource type is used for Computer-Based Training (CBT). Some examples include SCORM, AICC, and xAPI courses. |
| Training Plan / Certificate Program | Use this option to create a certificate curriculum course. A certificate is a type of curriculum featuring a group of learning resources that must be completed to complete the certificate. |
| Fulfilled Item |
A fulfilled item refers to any physical item that needs to be "checked out". Examples include:
|
| Content-Assessment | Use this to access the LearnShare Assessment Tool, which allows you to create tests within the LMS. |
| Video Based Training |
Use this when the course is a video. This option allows the administrator to set a percentage of the video that must be watched in order for completion to be granted.
|
| PowerPoint Course | Select this option to access the PowerPoint converter. This tool will convert your PowerPoint into an xAPI-compliant course. |
| Assignment | An assignment refers to any work that will be completed outside of the LMS. Assignments and any associated instructions are accessed through the user's Learning Plan. Once the user completes the assignment, they can upload it to the LMS. Those assignments are then routed to a reviewer or review team who can either mark the assignment complete or send it back to the user if additional work is required. |
| SPOC | SPOC stands for Small Private Online Course. A SPOC is a certificate resource type that is bundled with social features such as announcements and discussion boards. |

When the user enrolls in an online resource, the course description page displays an action button such as "Take Course" or "Access Resource".
The user clicks on this button to enroll and launch the course.
Course / LMS interoperability - Online courses communicate with the LMS using the AICC, SCORM, or xAPI interoperability industry standards to pass information between the course window and the LMS window.
Depending on the online course configuration, information sent from the online course to the LMS may include:
Information retained in and sent from the LMS to the course may also include:
Popup blockers - Online learning resources launch in a new internet browser window. It is important that users have pop-up blocking software disabled or the course will not launch. Please work with your network infrastructure team to keep popup blockers managed.
